U3 = 04:22:24 PDT
U4 = 05:23:30 PDT
P4 = 06:21:01 PDT

P1: Penumbral first contact: when the very first shading appears on the Moon.
U1: Umbral first contact: when the dark central umbra first touches the Moon.
U2: Umbral second contact: total eclipse begins.
Greatest: Greatest eclipse: when the Moon is closest to the middle of the umbra.
U3: Umbral third contact: total eclipse ends.

Honestly if you are an animal lover, sensitive, or a blood freak, don’t bother watching this video because you will hate me forever. This video is intended to target meat lovers, like me, to become vegetarian. It is very biased and against the meat industry, and it shows cruel action taken against animals which are raised to be killed for food. The slaughter houses and barns video taped in this clip are unknown. It is not clear to me if this is done in U.S. or some other countries. This source of this video is Meat.org.

Now I did not become vegetarian after watching this clip, I don’t know about you!

As of writing this note, I have successfully moved out of the City of Los Angeles, and settled down in the city of Campbell, a beautiful, charming, and quiet city in Silicon Valley surrounded by creek parks, Campbell historic town, and of course, bunch of tech companies. I was fortunate to find a nice one bedroom apartment within two days after moving.

Now that I live alone, I have to say that I miss you all my roommates for the past three years at UCLA, and let me have this opportunity to remark some of the good or bad memories we had together:

Thank you Hamid Ameli for putting up with my cleanliness habits for the first year, and I know that it was harder for you to deal with it for an extra year, and I hope that was the only reason you moved out, and I apologize to you on behalf of our prudent friend who made this situation to a long-term drama by stepping into it unwisely. Besides, I am very happy that we are back together.

Scott McDevitt, I don’t know if you ever come across this post, but I am glad that I was not rooming with you for more than two months; I really not appreciated you drying your dirty shoes in my oven which I used for cooking and leaving your fealty spaghetti dishes all over the kitchen, and by the way, please don’t break into my apartment and step on my bed ever again! Other than that, I wanted you know that you were a cool, and funny guy, and I missed you putting so much sugar into your tea every time.

I owe Stanley a lot for being someone more than a friend; he was a good supporter, and listener. I am sorry that I made fun of you sometimes; you should know that half of the fun in that apartment in Ashton was because of you. I’ll see you around sometimes in the Bay Area.

Michael Ma, all I knew about you the first year was that you are an IEEE project member. But I am happy that we lived together. If you weren’t there, I wouldn’t have known some great people today like my feature lawyer Mr. Bruce Almighty, republican spokesperson Kara Cockerill, feature artist and singer Tenisha Williams, Kristina and Joey, Fiona, and Amy Yiu who I am sure is going to become the next Mother Theresa in the history except that she is not Albanian.

Yen Chen, you are someone special! One day I guess I have to pay $70 to come and watch your competition in Guilty Gear, Star Craft, or whatever game you were playing. I have seen a lot of it; thus I can testify it is worth bidding on your gaming skills. Secondly, if you ever open a restaurant and you become the chef, I’ll be your customer on hourly basis. Your oregano flavored poultry will always carry your signature with it. By the way, thank you for cleaning the room two weeks before I move out, it meant a lot to me.

Nathaniel Roberts, you are a great friend, though, I want you know that one day you make a really good father. It was your help and advice that helped me move on regardless of some tough feelings I had; your experience was a mirror giving me a reflection of myself with a wider spectrum, making it easier to see. If you weren’t there, I wouldn’t have been happy in San Jose now. By the way, I suggest you be cautious with Persian girls because they might distract you too much, and you end up being at UCLA for 10 years.

Daniel Nguyen, welcome home! I know the first few days were awkward with my life packed in boxes lying in the living room, but I want to let you know that you have great roommates. Enjoy your time with them as much as you can. Don’t forget to take advantage of rooftop view and Jacuzzi; it was something I often forgot about.

Last, but not least, the greatest goofy of them all, Mr. Kamran Afshari. You are a great man and relative, but a sneaky paparazzi; for sure one day I am going to be very famous and then you can make a use of your recorded material and pictures, but unlike your intentions, I will benefit from exposure of those materials to public since my definite career is very related to the performances in those pictures and videos. “Yo baastad” left me out! I am the only uncle living here, and I’ll have to make up for your uncle duties too. I’ll make sure that your nephew doesn’t learn anything about you. Hey! Stay strong and keep the ‘V’ card. It won’t lose its value. And if you got an academia opportunity, you better go for it! I hope we all stay tuned and in touch. Leaving LA shouldn’t mean anything except being 320 miles apart. Otherwise our hearts will stay young and beat together.

Respect.

Well, I am sure I did not beat the record of collecting wall posts in Facebook in one day with respect to some other folks. But I just want to appreciate all of those 19 people who took the time of logging in during their finals week or busy workday and posting happy birthday wishes on my Facebook wall. But how I got them all on Monday and not before that is very simple. I had the privacy option of displaying my birthday set to off, and I turned it on the morning of my birthday. It is funny to realize that if I hadn’t turned it on, I might have gotten no wall posts. LOL! Anyways thank you all of you who posted on my wall, and I’ll make sure that I post birthday wishes on your wall, of course if you had the notification on to remind me. Here is the list of people names who posted on my wall:

Omid Tashayod, Sara Hojjat, Vasna Soroushian, Golita Behnoodi, Gitah Ram, Tejinder (Aka TJ) Singh, Farid Shirinfar, Arash Nasibi, Kristin Quan, Jonathan Lau, Gigi Lau, Alan Wood, Arash Fayz, Bianca Blanco, Pareesa Amjadi, Jaclyn Saito, Hamid Ameli, Arash Zahedi, Priscilla Chan, and Farid Shirinfar;

I also appreciate those friends writing me scrap books on Orkut: Anahitah Behrad, Hootan Nikbakht, Ali Karimi, Shaghayegh Zekavati, Kamran Afshari, Shahryar Khosraviani, Shahin Sheidaei, Armita Namiranian, Vahid Mojtahed, Shahin Shayandeh, Negar M, Sam Siar, Haleh Tabrizi, Babak Khalatbari, Mahya Farnia, Anahita Khosraviani, Bahman Sotoodian, Pedram Hovareshti, Foroozeh Varjavand, Farhad Mehrabi Nejad, Samar Azari, Arezoo Sami, and Sina Ferdowsi;

I also appreciate my close friends Alireza Binesh and Sina Siar who did not left me alone on the midnight of my birthday and cheered me up with their warm company.

I also appreciate all of these folk who made phone calls, emailed, or saw me in person to tell me Happy Birthday:

Sara Tavakoli, Parivash Kalantari, Mehraban Goudarzi my uncle, and Kia Goudarzi and Katayoun Goudarzi my lovely brother and sister in law;

Special thanks to Farzin Dinyarian for his one shot and two hits gift of graduation and birthday.

Thanks again Kamran for giving me your leftover chocolates. They are just as sweet as you are.

It is all your existence which makes me moving.

And if I left your name out even thought you expressed your love, call me and say you hate me because I am writing this post passed 3 am, and I am out of my mind.

And last but not least, starting next year, I am going to really celebrate my birthday instead of spending it in library or taking final exams like the past 6 years.

Gas Price Have you ever received an email from someone who you haven’t heard from for a while? You probably have, and I also receive emails from such people time to time. And guess what? They are not personal at all, but they are simply hoaxes which are being spread over the Internet to gather attention or cause social panic. What interests me is the motivation that causes a person to forward such emails to hundreds of their contacts. I found that most of these emails have few things in common:

1. They all carry a message which concerns most people. For example the issue of gas prices going up, or spreading HIV virus in society.

2. They all have some sort of conclusion at the end which convinces the reader that if they forward this message to 10-30 more people, they have served something for a good cause.

3. Finally, they all have false credits.

I am writing this post in regards to the gas price hoax email I have been receiving from friends during the past few weeks. In brief the message suggests a price war that can help stop gas price hikes to $4 per gallon. The message says that if we stop purchasing gas from Exxon and Mobile (Exxon and Shell in a different version of the message), presumably largest gas companies in the U.S., they eventually reduce their prices to attract customers and make profit again, and it will cause other gas companies follow the same price to stay in competition. So, in conclusion if 30 million Exxon or Shell customers stop purchasing gas from these companies, the gas price would not go up, but blowny!! It won’t work as thought. Gas demand would not change and people will still need to fill up their car tanks, so they have to go to other gas stations causing huge lines form in front of other gas stations than in front of Exxon or Shell. Other gas stations will ran out of gas quickly since the demand is higher at their station, Exxon and Shell will offer their gas to other companies to satisfy their customer demand. They sell their gas at pretty much the same price and they can lay back and close their gas stations, reducing their operation cost. So, they can actually benefit from it. It is a method of indirect sale and is very beneficial.

So please do yourself a favor and stop spreading spam and hoaxes over people’s inboxes and think about the situation and the method of raising awareness and credential of such emails. I owe much to Professor Bristow of my Entrepreneurship class who helped me understand why the price war does not work.

Bellow is he original message with some of my notes in double parenthesis, and also attached is a power point version of the hoax. It is virus free.

Original message:

GAS WAR This was originally sent by a retired Coca Cola executive ((What Coca-Cola has to do with gas? Perhaps they are going to sell corn syrup as a fuel alternative!)). It came from one of his engineer buddies who retired from Halliburton. It’s worth your consideration. Join the resistance!!!! I hear we are going to hit close to $4.00 a gallon by the end of this summer and it might go higher! !! Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action. Phillip Hollsworth ((Who the f… is this person? I could not find any credibility.)) offered this good idea. This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don’t buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! ((Yeah! This was another hoax too.))The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn’t continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, come ((Using proper English! Use past tense buddy! i.e. “came up”)) up with a plan that can really work. Please read on and join with us! By now you’re probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $2.79 for regular unleaded in my town ((And your town is ? I may consider buying gas at your town. It is darn cheap.)). Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 – $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace….. not sellers ((Negative on this one! Take some economics course.)). With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our cars ((I’ll recommend using public transportation instead.)), we can’t just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war. Here’s the idea: For the rest of this year ((This hoax was originated in 2006)), DON’T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers ((Good job! You hunted me.)). It’s really simple to do! Now, don’t wimp out at this point…. keep reading and I’ll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people. I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us sends it to just ten more (30 x 10 = 300) … and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)…and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth group of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers. If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it….. THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE ((Don’t you think it is a little overestimation for two gas companies customers?))!!! Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people ((Beg me! I am not going to do it.)). That’s all. (If you don’t understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people…. Well, let’s face it, you just aren’t a mathematician. But I am, so trust me on this one.) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I’ll bet you didn’t think you and I had that much potential, did you? ((Thanks for thinking it out for me. I cannot think myself. Did you do to gifted kids school?)) Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. I suggest that we not buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN ((I kept it down. I just blogged about your BS plan.)). THIS CAN REALLY WORK.

Funny ha!

OOOHH! You scared me! Yeah right! I have got this message (Look below) from few of my friends, and this shows how quickly this types of messages spread over the net, jamming your email boxes. This is a hoax, meaning that it is not coming from a true source. I am guessing it is tied to April fool’s day, and this means that all of you who started to believe this message and passed it on, are fooled. The second possibility is that some sick person created this to cause panic among people, and I personally applause to his/her creativity.

This is what I did to discover it is a hoax and not a true message. First of all, what is the credibility of the writer? Someone who is a director of some known medical research institute at least has few publications. I search medical databases including thousands of articles and publication from scholars around the world and I did not find this person namely ‘Arvind KHamitkar.’

Secondly, what the hell ‘I.A.S.’ stands for? Maybe it is some medical term which a technology guy like me does not know, but if the writer is professional and knows the audience, he should have written the full title instead of its abbreviation.

As the third reason, ‘Chennai’ is the name of a city and not an institution.

The fourth reason is simple. It says the girl who was engaged dies of ‘Shock thought’! Oh, really. What does this mean? Can you explain it to me? Any decent doctor, knows how aid kill people, perhaps not by ‘Shock thought.’

There are also few grammatical, punctuation, and dictation errors which I am not going to list them all, but I can say the person who wrote this was a professional chatter. He/She used ‘ur’ instead of your in the last sentence. Though, that could have been written by somebody who passed it on.

Anyways, I gave my analogy. Please have fun sharing yours. And last but not least, here is the original message:

Dear All,
Be careful
(Don’t avoid Pls read this mail)
FROM
Arvind Khamitkar , I.A.S,
Director of Medical & Research Div,Chennai

Dear Friends and Public,

A few weeks ago, in a movie theater, a person felt something poking from her seat.When she got up to see what it was, she found a needle sticking out of the seat with a note attached saying “You have just been infected by HIV”. The Disease Control Center (in Paris ) reports many similar events in many other cities recently. All tested needles were HIV Positive.

The Center also reports that needles have been found in cash dispensers at public banking machines.We ask everyone to use extreme caution when faced with this kind of situation. All public chairs/seats should be inspected with vigilance and caution before use. A careful visual inspection should be enough. In addition, they ask that each of you pass this message along to all members of your family and your friends of the potential danger.

Recently, one doctor has narrated a somewhat similar instance that hppened to one of his patients at the Priya Cinema in Delhi . A young girl, engaged and about to be married in a couple of months, was pricked while the movie was going on. The tag with the needle had the message welcome to the World of HIV family”. Though the doctors told her family that it takes about 6 months before the virus grows strong enough to start damaging the system and a healthy victim could survive about 5-6 years, the girl died in 4 months, perhaps more because of the “Shock thought”.

We all have to be careful at public places, rest God help! Just think about saving a life by forwarding this message. Please, take a few seconds of your time to pass along.

With Regards, Arvind Khamitkar ,
I.A.S, Director of Medical & Research Div, Chennai.

Rather than forwarding irrelevant mails, kindly pass this to every one. Probably ur mail can help some save his/her life .

A shallow movie carries a shallow message. This movie is simply another Hollywood production with no perception and accuracy of the historical events. There is absolutely no historian support behind this movie making it a fake production by Hollywood legends. I am protesting against this movie because it does not represent the true characteristics of Persian men, and women. Here are some good links for educating yourself about the truth behind Persian Empire and its people:

Project 300

And some great documentaries by history channel:

There are multiple parts to it, if you have time, watch them all. Otherwise to see what really happened for movie 300, watch part 3 and part 4. Thanks to Kourosh for gathering this list.

Image That is why we go to school for, I believe. “But how effective the current education system is regarding this matter,” I asked myself. This is what has been in my mind for a while, and professor Negroponte triggered my thoughts in his today’s lecture. “We eliminate poverty by educating people,” he said. What this means is that the traditional way of education, to build schools and train more teachers, does not work in poor countries due to lack of resources and budget. In a move to fight poverty and increase the level of education in poor countries he launched a project called “One Laptop per Child,” and that is to design, manufacture, and distribute a laptop, which costs only $100, among all children in poor countries. I am not going to talk about the details of the project, but those who are interested can educate themselves about this project here. After all, what I am thinking about is today’s education standard and established education system in developed countries.

Thousands of years ago humans learned reading and writing, and that became the standard for good living, farther in time schools developed up till a century ago in which a high school diploma became the leading degree in education, later an associate degree and finally a bachelors’ degree. But the education was not limited thus one could pursue farther degrees in master degree and philosophical doctorate. Today’s standards are a little higher such that good companies are looking for graduates with at least a master’s degree. But why the standard became higher? The reason is simple; we do not learn what is considered to be cutting edge in bachelor degree programs any more. Unfortunately, the programs are organized such that they focus of basic fundamentals rather focusing on teaching cutting edge material. I am not saying skipping fundamentals is good rather I believe it is hurtful, but there is no room for it in universities any more, and it slows down the education process for those who are willing to pursue it faster.

One of the main drawbacks of the current education system is its slow phase. Most people do not have a career goal during college and proceed based on the available options. This is a problem that most schools do not help minds to get shaped around an interesting subject, so student would focus on what they really like rather taking repetitive general education courses to fill up credits.
Now assuming that the problem above is solved, but what if a master degree was not enough and the standard increased up to doctorate degree? And what if doctorate and post doctorate activities were not enough? Where can you continue education?

The answer is by learning to learn one can learn for a lifetime with no limit. Saying that the career goal was not clear for a person during college but it can be defined after college. The mystery remains is what should you learn? And the answer goals back to one’s career goal. So, we see that this is a circular problem and by solving one with another, we will remain on the same page. However, I see a solution and that is to engage children in learning from early ages so that by the time they become a teenager, they have finite goal in their lives, and $100 laptop can be a tool to boost the speed of learning. By the time students get to college, they can focus on more specific courses rather taking general education in hopes of discovering their interest during the latter two years.

Some families may see this as an overwhelming standard, but the reality is that what is holding back some American families from proceeding with normal life is the lack of education in early ages. This means that if kids engage in learning activities since early ages, they will stay away from crime, drugs, and other bad decisions which are normally caused by anomalies in families or boredom.
In conclusion, the traditional education system is not a global solution to educate people; rather it is a limited solution for a limited population of people. We should engage more technology in learning during high school ages to boost the process of learning fundamentals and focus of subject interests during college. After all, this is all engaging the concept of “learn learning.”

She lost her when she was very young. He started a life with a new person keeping her with him. It is one of those things that if you lose it, you will live your entire life searching for it. You try to find it in every person, and every friend. If it gave you the sense a little, you start a relationship. That is how her relationship started. Putting the relationship aside, she always looked to find answers to questions which nobody could answer. The world threatened her badly. The world is so blind and cruel not leaving space for her. She doesn’t know who talk to, whom to trust, who to cuddle with.

In the tunnel of lost, she took her prettiness into business. After all, the business was not satisfying as much to her. People were mean and shallow. The only things they thought of were materials. They have lived their lives in materials, suffering in envy from friends, giving up happiness, and adopting a depressive, purposeless business. She could not find what she was after with any of her colleagues thus academia was her next choice.

Academia was not a friend to her from the sense that she could not find the one helping her to recover from her losses. Friends were enemies, and fathers were liars. Who else could she go to? And here I am and I saw the big lesson on her wall, “and then she realized they were all alike!”
