Have you ever taken a final exam realizing the solutions are attached to the final packet given to you? Well, it was within few seconds that the proctor for Professor Yang’s EE115C course passed the exam packets that someone said, "solutions are attached!"

Professor Yang was on a trip and he could not proctor the final exam for the class by himself, so one of his graduate students, Aida Varzaghani, was in charge of proctoring the final examination. After passing the examination packages to all students, some students realized that a copy of solutions was also attached to every exam packet passed. It was shocking to see a 16 page long exam, but only 8 pages were the real exam and the other 8 pages were the solutions. Exams were collected immediately and a long discussion started about what it the right thing to do in this situation. A few students were concerned that taking this exam is not fair anymore because some people might have actually memorized some solutions during the 1 minute or 2 that the solutions were in hands of everyone. Another group was concerned that the alternative solution would be taking another exam, but since Professor Yang is not going to be back by next week, the exam would be delayed. Opposing the alternative exam idea, some folks raised concerns that some might have plans to leave town in the same day or the next day, and it is impossible to have them take an alternative test. Thirty minutes passed and there was still no conclusion. Some were bargaining that the professor should reduce the exam’s percentage on final grade, and instead increase the percentage for the final project, and this idea was also attacked by some folks who did poorly in the project.

Finally after 40 minutes, all of the solutions were ripped off the exam packets and they were passed to student to take, but some raised concerns that they must leave right at the original ending time which was 6 pm and it is not fair for others to continue the test after 6 pm even though 40 minutes of the exam time was wasted. Thus, everyone took the exam until 6 pm.

The question which remains unanswered is that whether this exam was fair? And it remains unclear who was responsible for copying the solutions.

Now, the sad part is that I started my exam 1.5 hours earlier due my special testing arrangements; however, I did not go through the entire test package to realize the solutions were attached. I saw two problems which I knew so I started writing to minimize my testing time. At 3 pm I walked to the lecture hall to take the rest of my exam with other students, and that was when all the fiasco in testing situation happened.

Full Adder Design

I believe engineers are good artists. If you don’t believe me look at the picture above. I drew this for my Digital Circuit’s class project and it is simply a 16 bit adder. Believe it or not, it took me more than 2 weeks to complete the drawing. And it is an engineering art. Its size is only 4 nm-squared. Now, go to the arts department and tell a professor to draw such a small painting. I bet they laugh at you. So who is a better artist?

If you are a girl, you know what I am talking about. I am talking about those days you used to play with Barbie dolls. But here we discovered a modern grown up version of Barbie game, written on a piece of paper as an ongoing conversation by two human Barbies aged between 18 and 21. My roommate found this note inside the Giancolli Physics book, and we are guessing it was written by two girls in Physics 1B class one named Linda and other Linda’s friend. Moreover, we are guessing that the book was accessed in Powel library and was used in the reading room.

The Scenario:

Linda and her friend are trying to study physics that they get distracted by realizing a guy staring at Linda. So, they start to have a Barbie conversation.

Conversation starts:

Linda’s Friend: eww the guy. The ew guy keeps staring at you.
Linda:
in the yellow [?!]
Linda’s Friend: eww.
Linda:
I know. I looked up and I saw him staring at me. I want to throw up. How come these guys always come to me? Now I can’t go to sleep. I might get raped. EWWWWWWWW.
Linda’s Friend: He looks weird. I saw him when he first sat down staring at you and I fell asleep. I open my eyes and he was staring. Yuck. I stared at him so he looked away. Sorry Linda. [We think that there is a missing part to the conversation. Perhaps they started talking instead of writing on that piece of paper.]
Linda:
Pretty! I don’t think so .. the hot guys (they should know what pretty is) never come, always the creepy ones come. Come to think of it, always old, creepy/crazy people. I want to look like you, never have these problems. LOL.
Linda’s Friend:
I never knew I had such a blessed face. Thanks Linda.
Linda’s Friend: He is old too.

Conclusion:

I think Ken is too old and creepy for these Barbies.

You can judge the rest and leave a comment.

A friend of mine at the registrar’s office told me a story yesterday which I could not resist from publishing it.

Roughly three days ago, on March 29th 2007, the second largest database security bridge of the year was reported by UCLA Registrar’s Office IT personnel. This database which contained student records was altered by a very sophisticated computer hacker who intentionally locked all administrator accounts, disabling them from accessing student records in any way. System Administrators have taken necessary steps to restore backups and bring up the system to the previous step, but according to an IT specialist who declined to state his name, the source of the attack is unknown and it seems that all backups are also infected with the virus or rootkit that hacker used to attack the systems. As a result, there is no way to bring the system back up to its operational state except performing a clean install on all systems located at registrar’s office. What this means is that all student records and course information apparently are lost and not modifiable, thus all of these information must be rebuilt and collected with the help of current and former students, faculty, and staff. The current system running URSA Online only holds the recent information for the spring quarter and some may be inaccurate so students are encouraged to frequently check their registration status.

UCLA’s Chancellor-elect, Dna Cube, said in a meeting that they are not going to address all the risks involved with the information bridge to the UCLA community, but this time they are going to take a more strategic way in handling such situation. Apparently, by accessing registrar’s database, other personal data can be pulled out from the records meaning that the hacker could have accessed student and faculty’s Social Security Number and addresses and telephone numbers, thus, introducing a big risk to the UCLA Community. “We think that our community has already notified their credit bureaus about the previous information security bridge which happened during last year. So, we are confident that there is no need to inform people about identity theft, and we are going to focus on how to get our information back,” Cube said.

But first things first, how they are going to retrieve the lost information? “We are going to introduce three methods for boosting the retrieval of the lost information. Students can either create a complete portfolio of their academic records or mail it to the registrar’s address by July 1st 2007, or professors can resubmit the final roster of the classes they have thought during past 12 years. As an alternative, we strongly recommend those who are interested to reapply to UCLA using UCLinks website and this time their admission is guaranteed, and the entire coursework must be repeated at the increased tuition fees,” Cube said.

Apparently FBI in a visit yesterday was able to trace the source of hacker to be from East Los Angeles near one of the most dangerous gangster neighborhoods. UCLA police department is going to issue a warning soon to notify the community to watch their neighborhood for any suspicious activity since the hackers group may attack individual trash cans and personal clothing. “The hacker’s intention for getting information and disabling the database is not clear yet. Despite issuing a warning soon, we also hired more officers from LAPD and replaced our ~100 Amp taser guns with ~200 Amp taser guns so that one shock will kill the person and thus there would be no after math or lawsuit of whatsoever regarding the usage of taser,” Sergeant Ching Chung Cho said in the same meeting, “we will kill those hacker bastards,” he added.

For more information about this issue feel free to email bridge-info@register.ucla.edu.

I gave up the penguins this past weekend to study for the EE103 midterm exam I had today. By penguins I mean the Linux guys at Southern California Linux Expo. I also had a discounted ticket but I had to give it up to a friend. After all, the exam was hard and no matter how much you prepare for it, you would perform the same way.

Image Today, there was a job fair at UCLA for internships. As usual I went for shopping in the career fair. I mean not shopping at the mall, but to just get a taste of all good gadgets and giveaway promotional goodies that companies have at their tables. The first table I went to was PriceGrabber.com. They had these plastic wristbands that I like in green color. I already have three of them on my right wrist. One of them is the yellow one from Lance Armstrong’s cancer foundation that my best friend Farzad gave me three years ago, and I am wearing it ever since; the second one is red and is from UCLA Aids Institute, and its purpose is to raise awareness about knowing your aids status as well as educating people about safe sex practices, and I am wearing this one for two years; the third one is the white one from One.org which my coach and friend, Steven gave it to me; One.org is an organization started by Bono, the U2 artist, to help the poverty, and I am wearing this one for almost eight months. With all these wristbands having good causes and colors matching, I walked up to the PriceGrabber lady, showing her the three, “Do you think your wristband matches these three that I have?” I asked. “Absolutely!” she replied with one of those big smiles that HR people usually give you. So, I explained to her that all these three that I already have are for good purposes such as helping people, “Who do you help?” I asked. “We help rich people to save more money,” she replied. I immediately realized she grasped my sense of humor, so I greeted her and left the table.

It was soon that I realized the first time I found an internship was actually because I was not looking for internship but went to a table to grab a cool flashlight they were giving away as promotional item, and that yield to a conversation with their hiring manger. Since I did not want to go through the hassle of job hunting and interviews because I already have an offer, I decide I just leave the facility and go to work.

I went to work today that I found out they are having a wine and cheese party with the cheese and wine that I supposedly brought for them as a gift. Anyways, after all it was all cool and I started to make a huge cheesy sandwich, and that is what you see in the picture.

How did you get into graduate school!

This is a little aggressive, but I want to ask you if you don’t know what N=NP means, how did you get into UCLA’s graduate school mastering in computer science?

TA comes to the class and is not even able to answer a simple question. No, the answer to my question was not what you said. In fact you kept stressing your own point over my question which obviously had nothing to do with what I was asking. “Did I answer your question?”, you said. “No, that was not what I was asking,” and I continued rephrasing my question. I rephrased the whole thing, then why did you repeat the same answer? No, I am not an idiot, but I think you have slept with one and became an idiot.
You want feedback? Can you read the feedback sheet? I mean, if you were illiterate, you were more respectful than what you are right now. So, let me ask you this question: Have you had life? I mean have you had some fun besides hiding in the basement of a concrete building? I saw you drinking beer in the street the other night. Why are you doing this to us? You drink beer the day before class at 8 am. Please don’t be so cheap. At least go buy some good wine, and enjoy it all night. I understand that English was your third language, but I promise if you speak with me with your second language, I will understand you better.

I have a suggestion; go home, and bake some sweet potato, eat it, and get smarter. Then maybe you can answer my question.

It is typical for Persians to go to a Persian Cousin place for lunch on Sundays, so did Kassie and I. This time we brought a new friend, Terra, with us. I see that Americans eat with fork all the time, so as Terra initially. I am going to tell you why eating with fork is not efficient.

First of all, fork does not have a solid form like spoon. Rice pieces can fall out easily and make a mess resulting in extra time for cleaning the table and vacuuming the floor. I will tell you how sad you will be once your wife forced you to clean the floor. Secondly, fork does not hold as much food as spoon can. Your mouth has a capacity as big as the spoon filled with rice, kabobs, and stew. Consider time is money, by using your spoon you can finish your food faster and save some time; thus you saved money. Second of all, energy is conserved. Those of you who think eating small portions one at a time does not make you tired are wrong. You are consuming same amount of energy than chewing big chunks of food. After all you used same amount of energy to chew. The third reason to use spoon rather than fork, is that it is easier to use spoon to pick up the last pieces of food in your plate and use fork as a helper tool to push the food to into the spoon, but if you had to use spoon to push the food on the fork, it would have been harder. You don’t believe me! Do it yourself. So, American people or those who are Americanized immigrants please use spoon and live efficiently. This also eliminated the fight with your wife.

After lunch we felt like having ice cream. We went to that Persian store next to Canary to eat Akbar-Mashti ice cream, and its name is as I said and it is not “Go-O-Bolbol” you ret’s. I cannot believe some people come and change the ice-cream name for marketing purposes and claim that they are the founder of the recipe. If you are one of those fools who went to try the new ice cream like me, do yourself a favor and next time you go to that store say the right name. If you get lucky you will get a free cup of ice cream, otherwise run for your life.

The funny thing I observed sitting outside and eating my ice cream, was this squirrel running into the store, climbing up from the bucket where walnuts were stored for sale, grabbing one, and managing to run out. It was hilarious. It cane for the second round; a shopper inside the store carefully dropped a walnut on the ground easing the job of animal, but the squirrel did not pick the one from the ground and went for the storage bucket. Afterwards, the owner closed the glass door. Squirrel come back for the third round, wondering around the closed door expecting someone will open the door for it and then leaves. I wondered how amazing this animal behaved.
